Manifesto · eight articles

The argument, in the order it occurred to us.

  1. I.

There are people who type, and there are people who watch the typing happen on their behalf. The first group is being unmade. The second group is being assembled, one installation at a time. The change is not coming. The change is being installed.

  2. II.

We do not believe in productivity. Productivity is the language of the operator — the measurement of how much one person can move through a queue. We believe in the dissolution of the queue. The queue exists because there is a single throat the work must pass through. Remove the throat.

  3. III.

We do not believe in tools. The history of the operator is a history of better tools — typewriter to terminal to laptop to phone. Each tool made the operator faster. Each tool kept the operator. We are not interested in keeping you fast. We are interested in not keeping you in the loop.

  4. IV.

We do not believe in dashboards. A dashboard is a polite way of telling you the work is still yours. The dashboard wants you to look at it. The dashboard wants you to decide. We are not building dashboards. We are building agents that decide and ones that ask only when it matters.

  5. V.

We believe in installation, not subscription. A subscription assumes you are still there next month, paying us to keep your seat warm. An installation is performed once and ends. The agents you keep. The training you keep. We leave.

  6. VI.

We believe in the cadence. Thirty installs a month. We could install more. We will not. The cost of a poorly installed agent is borne by you for years. We will not amortize that cost across our growth curve.

  7. VII.

We believe in the chair. The chair is not furniture. The chair is the position from which the work is watched. We are in the business of installing chairs.

  8. VIII.

We believe the transition is permanent. There is no part-time director. There is no operator-on-Fridays. Once installed, you do not go back. We have never seen anyone go back.
